The Greek 'Dream'!

Writer's picture: Yannis KalafatisYannis Kalafatis

As we drive and we are prepared to close up on the southern side of the island, suddenly we stop. It is a tiny locaiton called 'Ledas'. So small but so beautiful! We barely take some pictures and leave. This has mixed feelings for me. This including nostalgia, love, warmth and a general idea of What Greece is in my head and my heart. Especially, the first pictures says it all. The little whitewashed house on the coast, on our left, the rocks being touched my the sea, this pink-leaf tree which 'glows' in between the green. Finally, the sand sand tha reflects the sunlight and the same goes for the clouds. Sometimes they cover the sun itself from our perspective. It can be rather annoying if you enjoying a good bath but it only lasts for seconds in reality or minutes for us. How about the sun itself? It is one of my favourite things to do. Stay under the sunlight either lying down on a beach towel or on a collapsable chair if I want to read a book. (Using sun cream protection of course). Until I feel overheated, then a jump in the chilled sea solves the 'problem' temporarily. After, it is time to enjoy a cold drink like coffee or just water and then relax or even meditate on the beach.

Most people at least used to talk (as it is dying dramatically) for the American dream and then we different variations like the Californian dream etc. People from all over the world used to crave a house, a family with a nice car and good life. As I mentioned... Not anymore. How long it would last anyway... No matter how good of a routine you have got or how comfortable rat race you are part of. There is nothing like saving money for your future and then being able to visit places like this. So small and astonishing! It is so precious to be by the sea with a cold drink and the sound of the wind surrounding you. If you don't like to swim, you can just rent one of those tiny houses and refill your batteries. If you don't like the heat or any of the above, You can visit waterfalls, caves and other hidden gems that we explore and keep exploring in Crete. That's why it is one of my favourite islands so far!
