As we get closer to the end of Crete's chapter. We stop in one of the most beautiful and Historically preserved cities in this island. Rethimno... Famous across Greece for its universities, the architecture and its music. I think you will find out how much I like to peak and take photographs through the arrow slits or embrasures or gunholes or even cannon crenels and machiolations. Actually, not through all of them but It was fun to find out about all those new words that I have recently added to my vocabulary.
There is a beautiful two or three subports connecting to the main one which are worth walking through. You might choose one of the cafes and enjoy some chilled ice cream during a hot day. If you keep going, you will find many many shops. Some of them, sell hand made crockery in town and they are just unique. A lot of statues, monuments and of course churches to be found.
How about palm trees and other trees, bushes and beautiful flowers which survive and thrive through the heat?
All this walking though... It is around the only hill and the most strategic place of the city. This is where the castle is found. It can oversee the whole area and the sea from all sides. When you start walking up the hill towards it, you will find yourself in front of a fancy and huge door. Entering it, will get you through history. Those amazing walls built by big stone bricks that bring a lot of quesitons in terms of who built them and the amount of detail they have. Something similar with the statues and the roads of those ages. I mean... look at the roads these days. They just throw some chemicals on top of each other and they still get destroyed whilst being ineffective... Back then, they would have three to five layer roads and they still are in use today. Even if you say 'they didn't have heavy vehicles'... Look at the Greek villages or areas like Rethimno where cars can be seen driving trough them to this day. They actually do really well.
Let's leave my road's rant aside and lets enjoy the view from the castle. Look at those wooden doors and the area around.
